Sustainability @ NFPS
North Fitzroy Primary School is committed to lowering carbon emissions. We aim to reduce our energy use through behavioural changes such as switching off lights and computers and implementing door and window regimes to maximize cross flow ventilation. We encourage students to ride or walk to school when possible, develop awareness of the importance of conserving energy/ using less fossil fuels and also ensure every student has opportunities to take part in tree planting days to help offset our carbon emissions. We purchase carbon credits to offset bus travel to and from excursions and camps and we liaise with community groups, businesses and councils so that we are working together to create a greener, sustainable future.
Rainwater Tanks
We now have three tanks to collect rainwater that were kindly donated to the school by one of our parents. The water that is collected will be used to irrigate our gardens and maintain green and flourishing play areas. We will also use the water on our wonderful veggie garden that is currently being maintained by our Garden Club with assistance from parents and staff during lunch times.
Schools Tree Day 2009
Schools Tree Day was a huge success yet again this year! Many students from grades Prep to Six participated in planting over 100 new shrubs and grasses.
ELF Program
Our ELF (Environmental Leader of the Future) program encourages students to take ownership over their impact on the environment, and encourage others to make a difference. Each class has two ELFs, who are responsible for making sure lights and computers are switched off when not in the room, composting, and making sure that the correct things are being recycled.
We have fortnightly ELF meetings (run by our Senior ELFs) where issues and current initiatives are discussed, so that the ELFs can feed this information back to their classes.
Water Buckets
At NFPS we have water buckets under all of our bubblers to catch the grey water. This water is then used to water plants and gardens throughout the school – in particular the veggie patch!
Composting
We have revived out composting program in 2009. We found that having compost bins in the classrooms was attracting pigeons and bugs – so this year we are doing things the old-fashioned way! We are wrapping our compost up in old newspaper. This makes sure that we can keep composting – but it is a lot cleaner!
